Program availability, fees and terms vary by state. Some programs are not available in every state.
Debt settlement
Debt settlement programs are not suitable for everyone. Enrolled accounts typically become delinquent, which can significantly lower your credit score. Creditors are not obliged to negotiate or to accept any settlement, and they may continue collection activity, including legal action, during the program.
Where the FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule applies, fees are charged only after a settlement has been reached, agreed by you and at least one payment has been made toward it. Fees are a percentage of the enrolled debt, as disclosed in your agreement.
Forgiven debt may be treated as taxable income. Consult a tax professional about your circumstances.
Debt management plans
Debt management plans repay the full principal. Creditor participation and concessions are not guaranteed. Setup and monthly fees, where charged, are capped by state law and disclosed before enrolment. Enrolled accounts are usually closed.
Loans and refinancing
Consolidation loans, personal loans and mortgage refinancing are provided by third-party licensed lenders. Approval, rates and terms depend on the lender's criteria, including your credit profile and income. Rate checks may use soft inquiries; a full application usually involves a hard inquiry.
Tax debt relief
Tax resolution outcomes depend on the IRS or state agency and on your documented financial position. Penalty abatement, installment agreements and offers in compromise are not guaranteed. Interest generally continues to accrue.
